Marangoni instability triggered by selective evaporation of a binary liquid inside a Hele-Shaw cell

Interfacial stability is important for many processes involving heat and mass transfer across two immiscible phases. When this takes place in the form of evaporation a binary solution with one component being more volatile than other, gradients surface tension can arise. These ultimately destabilise liquid-gas interface. In present work, we study an ethanol-water solution, which ethanol has larger volatility. The contained horizontal Hele-Shaw cell open from end to allow into air. A Marangoni instability then triggered at liquid-air We temporal evolution by observing effects that it on bulk liquid. More specifically, growth convective cells visualized confocal microscopy velocity field close interface measured micro-particle-image-velocimetry. results numerical simulations based quasi 2D equations satisfactorily compare experimental observations, even without consideration evaporative cooling, although cooling play extra role experiments.
